Response to treatment after 20 days for Photos:Integrated Treatment for FILARIASIS &LYMPHOEDEMA
“I feel the capacity to care is the thing which gives life its deepest significance.” I could see a sign of satisfaction on her face when she came to me during her first follow up. I remember the day when she came for the first time to attend the baseline counseling. Nilima(name changed) was a good looking 19 years engineering student from Coimbatore(place changed). The huge swollen filarial limb with stinking discharge and severe pain made her totally disturbed . During the counseling session, I could support her emotionally along with detailing our treatment procedures. The photos showing the results after the treatment consoled her anxiety to a great extend. Hopefully she told me, “my great ambition is to wear a chudidar like you and other girls of my age .” I was not able to schedule her appointment that day itself due to the rush in our treatment centre . Later she could come on the scheduled day for the 14 days treatment. Daily I spent a few minutes with her to give emotional support to cope with the problems. At the time of discharge- she added “you people gave me a new life. I hope I can continue my education. I will get an identity among my friends. I am so grateful to you that you could bear the foul smell from my legs on counseling day for 2 hours , even it was difficult for my father.” She got almost 65% reduction by today. When she shared her joy by distributing the sweets among the treatment team who washed and cared her limb , I felt that our effort became fruitful. This is not the story of Nilima alone………the impact of disease makes no discrimination with rich and poor. But the difference is that, affordable can avail the treatment but poor are waiting for the sponsorship. Miss.Neethu K Jacob MSW Patient Relation Officer |
